"Johnny" Rep
John Nicholaas "Johnny" Rep (born 25 November 1951 in Zaandam, North Holland) is a former Dutch striker. Many people remember him alongside with champions like Johan Cruijff, Ruud Krol e Johan Neeskens: in other words, the great Holland team, two times finalist in the FIFA World Cup (1974/1978), worldwide known as the team who played the “Total football”.
Johnny Rep, who loved playing on the right side, was able to score the winning goal for Ajax Amsterdam against Juventus in the 1973 European Cup final in Belgrade. It was probably the best goal he scored, apart from the ones he made for the national team in the FIFA World Cups.
1972 and 1973 were the best seasons for him: he won with Ajax Amsterdam the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup after winning the trophy actually named “The Champions League”.
Two seasons in Spain with Valencia and six in France (Bastia and St.Etienne) were the time he spent outside his native Netherlands before ending the career with four seasons shared between PEC Zwolle, Feyenoord and Harlem. With French side Bastia he reached another great final, losing the UEFA Cup at the very last stage against PSV Eindhoven (0-3 on aggregate) .
