Bruce Grobbelaar

Many people remember him as the crazy keeper. Bruce David Grobbelaar (born 6 October 1957 in Durban, South Africa) is a former Rhodesian/Zimbabwean-South African-British goalkeeper and manager. For sure, is best period was the one spent in Liverpool FC in 1980s, when he played 440 times, winning everything could possible. Born in South Africa, Bruce, when he was just two months old moved to Rhodesia (now is Zimbabwe) with his parents.

He showed aptitude at rugby, cricket and football and, after two years serving in the army, he earned a contract with Durban City. At that time, he was offered a trial by West Bromwich Albion FC, but having problems with a work permit he moved to Canada for a year with Vancouver Whitecaps, finally returning to England with Crewe.

In 24 games for them, he even scored a penalty catching the eyes of Liverpool managers. After 14 years the result is an incredible bunch of trophies including the European Cup 1984 won in Roma against A.S.Roma after penalties.

Unpredictable and histrionic, Bruce played for Rhodesia, as an 18-year old in a friendly against South Africa and 32 times for Zimbabwe national football team between 1992 and 1998.

Retired in 1999, Grobbelaar moved back to South Africa where he coached a number of teams as well as his native Zimbabwe’s national team, where he was twice player-manager.

During the World Cup 2010 in South Africa he was appointed as pundit by Norwegian TV-Channel TV 2.
