Profile
Oleg Blokhin was born in Kyiv and he became the most famous player in the Soviet Union as Lev Yashin. He was Dynamo Kyiv’s star during the 70s.
Blokhin was nicknamed “Ukrainian arrow” because of his speed and his technical qualities. He’s still considered one of the most deadly forwards in football history.
Blokhin’s quickness was a mother’s gift: she was national champion in 80 metres hurdles. But his talent became from his father, who was Dynamo Kyiv’s youth team coach. He kept training him when he was just a kid, using skittles to improve his dribbling.
He spent most of his career playing for Lobanovski’s Dynamo Kyiv, the greatest team in USSR at that time. Blokhin played 109 matches scoring 39 goals. In 1975 Dynamo Kyiv won European Cup Winners' Cup and European Super Cup, becoming the first Soviet team to win an European cup. Thanks to these triumphs he became European player of the year in 1975.
Blokhin was a great goal-scorer, but also an amazing assist man. He was great in free kicks and he loved to cut from the left to shoot. His speed and his dribbling allowed him to surprise the other team.
He won 8 national championships and 5 cups. During the 70s Real Madrid tried to buy him in many occasions, but Soviet Unions’ authorities always denied that chance. In 1987 he left Ukraine to end his career in Austria and Cyprus. Unfortunately for the great European teams the door were open a little bit too late to let Blokhin arrive.
