JOHN CHARLES STARTED AS A DEFENDER
John Charles, the legendary Welsh centre forward, was a defender at the beginning of his career. He was bought by Leeds United at the age of sixteen for 10 pounds, he made his debut with the A-team when he was 17, at the age of 18 and 71 days he became the youngest player in the history who wore the Welsh selection shirt. At the age of 21 Charles was a central defender but was shifted to the attack because his team did not score enough. John accepted reluctantly, but his results were impressive: 26 goals in the first season, then 42 (Leeds promoted to the first division), then 38 (top goalscorer). Also in the national selection he moved to the attack and was designated captain of the team. (Photo: Getty Images)
