STARTING OF VAN BASTEN
There are great born footballers and great made footballers, Marco Van Basten was both. The piece of paper still exists on which the boy Marco wrtote descriptions of 14 feints, some borrowed from Johan Cruyff and Didier Six, others from unknown amateur players in Utrecht. He mastered every one. In 1982 he made his debut for Ajax the way Ajax players are exprected to make their debuts: aged 17, coming on as sub for Cruijff, and scoring. A year later he was playing for Holland. Aged 18, with other kids like Ruud Gullit and Ronald Koeamn, Van Basten engineered a 3-2 win over the Republic of Ireland that has entered Dutch football lore as 'the Wonder of Dublin" - it was the birth of the Dutch team that would win the country's only prize, the 1988 European Championships.
